We now move on to Dr. Hite’s look at macronutrients, which are protein, carbohydrate, and fat.  Right off the bat it’s easy to see that Dr. Hite has bought into a lot of the bunk that is commonly believed about these things that has been well proven false and is just based upon incorrect speculation and junk science.

He’ clearly has some false beliefs about animal fat for instance and suggests that we consume low fat meat, and preferably not red meat.  The idea that animal fat is bad for us has been well dealt with elsewhere, as has the purported connection between the risk of cholesterol in the diet and cardiovasular risk, and when you boil this stuff down the reasoning behind this is a big joke, but the way they torment and misinform people is not.

If these so called authorities were looking to lead people toward the most unhealthy ways of eating possible this would be the perfect way to do it, they have done this, and our health has greatly suffered as a result.

Without delving into this too much, and taking up too much space here, here’s a taste of the stupidity that is in play here.  So we look at people with cardiovascular disease and we see plaques consisting of cholesterol in their arteries.  So we think, aha, too much cholesterol, so let’s eat less and let’s also give people medicines to block cholesterol production in their liver and we’ll be helping them reduce their risk of this.

Cholesterol is important though and provides many benefits, it is the precursor of many hormones, it helps transport toxins out of our body, and it even seeks to repair damaged arteries, the stuff that got them alarmed.

So what happens is that the arteries get injured, and chloresterol forms a sort of bandage, but they say, well let’s not only rip off the bandage, let’s wreck our health by removing all of the other benefits cholesterol brings us, and our health takes a big hit.

People who are ill also can have high LDL cholesterol and this is another way the body seeks to improve its well being, and while LDL cholesterol and heart disease are correlated, this does not mean one causes the other, although as it turns out it’s the heart disease that causes the high LDL, not the other way around.

If we take natural things to improve our health, this can lower LDL, there’s less need of it in other words, but artificially lowering it is a terrible and harmful idea.  We end up seeking to lower it to the extent that we cause the disease of low cholesterol in people, as well as damage their bodies, clearly, but who cares, it’s all about this facade of mistaken beliefs.

So this stuff has been roundly beaten elsewhere, but I want to talk a little about the latest crowing against red, meat, which Dr. Hite warns us of, and that’s the belief that red meat increases risk of cardiovascular disease by increasing something called TMAO.

It doesn’t take much to set these people off to even more finger wagging, and Dr. Hite’s finger is wagging at us as well.  They didn’t bother studying this very much though, although some ended up doing that, a study at Harvard which showed that this is false, that red meat does not raise TMAO to a degree that we need to be concerned about at all.

We studied some other foods and found that common vegetables like peas, carrots, and potatoes elevate TMAO more than beef, as does whole grains.  It turned out that what elevates TMAO the most is seafood, but that meat was of color they like so none of this stuff was made popular, and the fairy tale of the damning of red meat continues to be widely told.

To make this worse, there never has been a causal relationship established between TMAO and cardiovascular disease in the first place.  Just because someone calls themselves a scientist doesn’t mean they are at all interested in the truth of something, and more often than not, their work is obscenely biased with significant elements of what we could only call stupidity.

Most people don’t actually look at the reasoning behind these assertions though, it is enough to say a study claims this or that so watch out.  Not everyone is fooled though and thank goodness for the internet where people can be exposed to alternative viewpoints, like for instance people who take these folks to task and discover their positions cannot even be defended in a sensible way, although that’s not generally a requirement to get a study published, you only need a sympathetic publisher and if you are out to bash the same things they are, like red meat for instance, you have found a friend who will collaborate with you in trickery.

Dr. Hite even looks to portray carinitine in a negative fashion, as one of the purported drawbacks is that red meat is high in carnitine, and since red meat is bad for you, carnitine may be as well.  Carnitine though is widely used as a health supplement, involving people taking quite a bit more than they get from their diet, and has many benefits, is safe to take, and is associated with the improvement of a variety of conditions, including diabetes.

They did do a study though and gave people some red meat and their TMAO levels went up, oh my gosh!  This is hilarious actually, as mentioned, many foods do that, and many raise it more than red meat does, and we also want to ensure that if we’re going to be alarmed by this, that TMAO levels be elevated to where they become a concern, but these researchers didn’t bother even thinking of such matters, the blood was on the table now and they were eager to take pictures and share them.

It’s important to get a good amount of protein in your diet though for several reasons, and he does mention that this does slow down the assimilation of carbs, which is generally a good thing.  This is why a meal of bare carbs puts people’s blood sugar up more than a meal balanced with all 3 macros in it, or even better perhaps, just two, fat and protein, which turns out to be the most blood sugar friendly type of meal actually, for reasons that are quite obvious.
